The Austrian vignette for 2025 is “Sea green”. It entitles you to use the Austrian expressways and is available for motorcycles and cars up to 3.5 t. The vignette must be purchased before driving on the expressways and stuck to the windshield. The 2025 annual vignette is valid from December 1st, 2024 to January 31st, 2026. If you are caught without a valid vignette, you have to pay a replacement toll. If you want to use the vignette for two vehicles and do not affix it correctly, you will also be penalized for manipulation.

With the arrival of the Swiss E-vignette, the end of the adhesive era has been heralded!

After years of preparation, Switzerland has started selling the digital toll vignette today – August 1, 2023. The ‘E-vignette’ is introduced and will gradually replace the adhesive vignette. The sale of adhesive vignettes will be phased out and will no longer be for sale outside Switzerland in the first phase. In the coming years, the adhesive vignette will continue to be available in Switzerland, at the border and other points of sale in the country. Whether the adhesive vignette will disappear completely, including in Switzerland, depends on sales figures. A minimum number of adhesive vignettes will be considered that will be sold per year, parallel to the sale of the ‘E-vignette’.

The fact that people in Switzerland and abroad immediately managed to find the ‘E-vignette’ is apparent from the released sales figures of the first days. By the end of the day on Thursday 3 August, 23,500 ‘E-vignettes’ had been sold via the official webshop of Swiss customs. There are also other sales channels for purchasing the ‘E-vignette’. These sales are not included in this. The price of the ‘E-vignette’ may be higher via another sales channel.

It should be clear that I personally am not happy with the arrival of the digital vignette. I have been collecting European toll vignettes for over 30 years and started with Switzerland. This is now gradually coming to an end and eventually the adhesive vignette will also come to an end in other countries in Europe.

Even though the digital toll vignette is not immediately a collector’s item for me, I still bought one. It’s an important event so I couldn’t ignore it.

The Swiss E-vignette is easy to purchase in the official webshop of the Swiss customs. The ‘E-vignette’ costs 40 CHF, about €40, is easy to pay by credit card and is valid for 14 months; from December 1 to February 1.

If a check mark is placed at ‘Publicly Viewable’ when purchasing, then it is easy to check afterwards, on the website of the Swiss customs, with the registration number whether a toll vignette has been purchased for the vehicle. This can be useful if that is no longer in memory. In any case, a proof of payment and ticket will also be sent to the specified email address by email. It is stated on the ticket that it is not necessary to have a printed version in the car.

In Switzerland, fixed and mobile cameras are used to check whether the vehicle has a valid ‘E-vignette’.

What started as a fun thing……………. now the 10,000th vignette.

It started in 1987 with a sticker of Switzerland and has grown into a collection that matters today. And not just for me! The authorities of many European countries whose vignette is represented in my collection, new and used, monitor my collection and keep in regular contact. They are very enthusiastic about this passion and the interest in their vignette.

I regularly receive updates on regulations and changes that have been made or are imminent to the vignette. Countless invitations from authorities to visit, from the printers where the vignettes eventually roll off the press, from designers where the most beautiful vignettes in Europe are given a face, from television producers who would like to hear my opinion about a referendum on the vignette in Switzerland and there in the Primetime Journal in an interview with me, and many many others.

And of course the many enthusiastic reactions from people in Europe and beyond who help me to expand my collection. Well, that’s what this extension has become. From the 500th vignette to the 1000th and so on until today. Each one is unique due to the serial number.

Today February 7, 2022 I received a 2014 Bulgarian vignette, a weekly vignette. And like all vignettes in my collection a unique piece. But, there is something else. Where it started with one vignette, this vignette from Bulgaria is the 10,000th vignette.

Today’s article in the Tages Anzeiger talked about the colors of the 2020 Swiss motorwayvignet. As far as I know it was never before that the colors were published so early in the year. In my collection is a 2020 specimen included who gives a perfect view of the new colors. This specimen is the 19th printed exemplar.

Existing serial letters disappear and new ones are introduced. The letter I was introduced in 1985 but disappeared already in 1986. Unfortunately I have not been able to catch one for my collection. Now a new letter appeared, the R. The first time I saw a vignet with this serial letter was a few month ago. It was exposed on a website. I could not imaging having one myself now. So quickly! First thing to do now is to find out in which country this letter has been released.

Once inside the building I could take some pictures of the private collection of emitted vignettes in the past. Yes indeed, also the Oberzolldirektion collects vignettes. They do so to keep an eye on the colors used in the past. Colors are changing every year and here on this special wall it is immediately clear which colors has been used up till now.

In 2013 in Switzerland a referendum was held in the context of the price increase of the motorway vignette from CHF 40,00 to CHF 100,00. There was a lot of media attention for this referendum. I also was involved in an item about this subject made for the 20:00 o’clock news of the Swiss Italian Television on the 26th October 2013. This particular transmission you will find under the YouTube button at the top of this site.

In that same 20:00 o’clock news the designer of the Swiss motorway vignette showed in an interview the final design of 2014 motorway vignette to the Swiss. During my visit in Bern Mr. Hirter was pleased to hand me over that particular vignette. That I could add this vignette to my collection was a special moment.

Hello, I collect European toll stickers, also known as autobahn vignettes or stickers. As a child I became fascinated by the Swiss Autobahn vignette in 1987. Probably also a bit through the country and the motorways that are so different from ours and that makes an impression on you as a child.

I have continued to collect and in more than 30 years my collection has grown into a huge collection of vignettes from all over Europe. New and used, perforated by date and not perforated.

I am always looking for new possibilities to add vignettes to my collection. Each vignette is unique because of the serial number and letter. It is often also possible to deduce from the serial letter where the vignette was originally purchased. You can then more or less follow the journey that the vignette has made.
